Second UNESCO Science and Technology Camp 2009 in Cambodia

UNESCO invites children from Southeast Asia to experience Science, Technology and Engineering at the Regional Science and Technology Camp for Youth in Southeast Asia. The camp is open to children aged around 12-15 years from countries in Southeast Asia and possibly other Asian countries, who will work together on Science Lab activities, including building robots.

The camp programme includes various aspects of engineering education, including hands-on learning experience in robotics and practical applications of science, technology, and engineering, as well as lots of focused brainstorming with peers from different cultural backgrounds, real-world teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, etc.

A Science based Approach to realise the Future We Want for All
UNESCO in collaboration with ISTIC and MEXT-Japan

4-5 April 2013, Hotel Istana KLCC, 73, Jalan Raja Chulan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

UNESCO Office Jakarta has initiated, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, a new initiative entitled “Sustainability Science”. This project aims to raise awareness about sustainability science among policymakers in the Asia and Pacific region, with a view to position this as part of the national and regional science and technology policy. This is being achieved by:

Facilitating a regional workshop that will bridge the knowledge gap on sustainability science, and link the research with policy development,
Elaborating a review paper on sustainability science, and contributing to promotion and integration of sustainability science in UNESCO’s programme strategy.

As part of ongoing consultations about the UNESCO Sciences Programme, UNESCO Jakarta with the support of Japanese Fund-in-Trust, and in collaboration with the National University of Malaysia especially with the institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) and other institutions is organizing a International Workshop on Sustainability Science : A Science based Approach to realise the Future We Want For All, 4 - 5 April 2013 at Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This workshop brings together a group of regional experts and stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss and develop a common understanding of sustainability science and its role in addressing and solving key global challenges. As such this will help to position the role of science, technology and innovation in the post-2015 agenda.

During the two-day workshop in KUala Lumpur, there will be a Plenary Session of "Video Conference Link with Addis Ababa, Asia-Africa Cooperation lead by Abdalla Abdelsalam Ahmed in KL", with the theme of South-south Cooperation for Post 2015 Agenda.

This session will be held on 4 April 2013, 16:00 - 17.30 Malaysia Local Time (GMT+8). Connect-Asia will broadcast this event live from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

New Web-based Open E-learning Session from NII Japan!

CONNECT-Asia in collaboration with NII (National Institute of Informatics) Japan will organize a web-based interactive e-learning session titled "Consumers' Acceptance and Behavior of E-Commerce in Asia and Cross Borders", which will mainly present the observed response of consumers towards the trending e-commerce system in Japan for both domestic and international markets.

If you are a student or an IT Industry Personality with an interest in the critical success factors of ICT-enabled services and e-commerce in an international context, and would like to understand the applied working system in Japan, then you can have learn, share, and live interaction with two NII's experts in the field by using the WebELS system.

This event is free and open for public. Ensure your participation immediately by registering through this form. What you need is basically just an internet connection and a browser with Flash plugin enabled. Note that it is possible to have more than one person attending from the same site.

"One Day in Asia" Event Report

On Thursday, November 1, 2012, UNESCO Jakarta held an event called “One Day in Asia” (ODIA). The idea was to utilize the power of CONNECT-Asia ICT networks and mobile technology to livestream a broadcast from UNESCO World Heritage sites located in multiple countries. The whole event would go from noon in Nepal to night-time in Australia, wrapping up one whole day in Asia within the two-hour event, with the addition of morning in Greenwich, England.

With the cooperation of our NREN partners, we successfully livestreamed broadcast from eight countries’ cultural heritage sites. We utilized USTREAM® and mobile device (such as iPhone, iPad, Android phone, etc) for the broadcast from each site and to worldwide audience, and video conference system to connect the whole experience.

From Indonesia, angklung music band performed in the backyard of UNESCO Jakarta office.

During ODIA, two guest speakers also gave their highlights on the event. They were Mr. Masanori Nagaoka, Programme Specialist of Culture Unit in UNESCO Jakarta office, and Dr. Faridah Noor Mohd Noor, e-Culture expert from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Dr. Faridah explained the historical value of A Famosa, Malacca City which was featured during the broadcast from Malaysia.

Hundreds of viewers joined the event by watching the live broadcast from video conference and USTREAM live streaming. They could also tweet their comment or message during the event using hashtag #ODIAevent. Several sites from the Asian region, including Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Japan, also connected through the video conference and shared this unique experience.

We are excited to announce our third session of RIIS featuring Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Space is an eternal theme in the search for the origin of human beings and the universe and is one of the best subjects for educational activities. JAXA has given high priority to educational activities to nurture the human resources of those with an interest in things like space, the earth and life, and these will bear fruit for future Japanese and international space development, space science and aeronautical technology.
